Found a note in my cabin from my Servant who had
refused work, paid him off and did work myself.
Went on the Quarter deck, and applied for a Sick Mess
Attendant, had some few words about it with the
Commanding Officer, and was eventually ordered to
have a Second Class Boy. Everything very unpleasant
and uncomfortable on board.

May 8th Making the best of our way to Paranaguy,
with a head wind: saw a Steamer to leeward. Supposed
to be the Josephine, with the English mail on board.
Made and shortned sail as requisite to passing squalls.
In the evening, had a four handed game at Cribbage and
turned in about nine -

May 9th an increase on the Sick List, two rather bad
cases, the usual amount of growling and discontent
both in the Mess and among the Ships Company.
Served out Slops, soap & bacey to Ships Commdr. Played a
quiet game at Crib and after a gripe, turned in.

May 10th At 5 the breeze freshened and we were going
along seven knots, cleaned ship throughout - In the evening
had cards, made it Saturday night & turned in , after
we had anchored in seven fathoms.

Sunday May 11th off Paranaguay - By daylight got
steam up; weighed and proceeded for the anchorage
coming to in seven fathoms with the stream anchor-
Commander went up to the Town and some of the
Officers went ashore. At 4 Commdr dined with us
going ashore after dinner, and coming back at
eleven, by which time I was fast asleep -
