July 12th After what was called breakfast, I went
ashore and saw my patients: had some Maltee with
Sucea, then smoked a pipe and after a glass of brandy
and water returned with the Secretary. Mr Dale (the
Consul) having left in a small boat yesterday. After
dinner went ashore & played pool, coming on board again
by sunset, and having made it Saturday night turned in.

Sunday July 13th 1856 At the Port of Parana.
Went to Divisions at 9.30 and after dinner gave leave to
part of the Ship's Company. I went ashore to see some of
my patients, and returned to dinner. In the afternoon
some ladies and gentlemen came on board to see the ship,
one lady very handsome but not able to speak a word of
English, fortunataely a gentleman spoke French, and by his
interpretation, I was enabled to make myself understood and
conducted the party over the vessel, and there gave them
wine & biscuits in the gun room - Some of the men got very
drunk and the Commdr had to send some of them down
with the assistance of some Spaniards, had it not been for
the timely interference of Mr Dal, one of them would have
undoubtedly been shot.

July 14th A wet morning, had an altercation with the
Commanding Officer, with whom I had not been in speaking
terms for some days. Went ashore in order to see my sick,
came off to dinner and went ashore again, returning at
sunset, and after a pipe turned in.

July 15th While ashore at Myers, the Ministers Servant
came in requesting me to go to town, as Mrs Freeman
and two of the Servants were sick: I accordingly went
and found there was nothing serious, and after receiving
an invitation from Mr Christie; I walked
