During the night the wind shifted and we
had to haul upon a wind. At 10 Inspected ship,
read Articles of war, and mustered by Open list.
In the Mess every thing very uncomfortable.
At 3 Commdr dined with us. Towards evening
the wind fell light. Went early to bed.

January 5th. A fine little breeze sailing in Co
with the Indefatigable. In the evening the wind
freshened a little and we had some difficulty
in keeping our proper position astern of the Flag
as our ship sailed better than the Indefatigable.

January 6th Still a fair wind. Being exercising
day, after quarters, at 10 we went
through a great deal of manoeuvring in making,
shortening, furling and shifting sails (great [lot?])
In the evening we had the same sort of games,
but only for a short time. A beautiful moonlight
night with a cool breeze.

January 4th Almost calm, but in the
forenoon the breeze again freshened and by noon we
were running 10-15. Passed a large Brazilian
barque also running, and a ship just in
sight to windward standing to the Nward course
double reefed topsails and courses. Carried
away a fore topmast - stinsail boom in fat
headed watch. In the evening had a quiet game
of cribbage and after a pipe turned in.

January 8th At daylight saw the land. A fine
breeze blowing, with smooth water and the sails
