My dear Hassall
It is a long time since I felt
the pleasure I did in seeing a letter from you
but in a short time my feelings were pain-
fully reversed and my sorrows doubled by
the addition of yours. I wish I could say or do
anything to afford you consolation but that
is wishing for a power that time alone
prefers. I flattered myself with the hopes of
seeing you and passing some time with you
before your departure but now there is very
little probability of our ever meeting or in-
exchanging sentiments except by letter
of the last. I hope you will not neglect to take
advantage if an old and sincere friend is
worth a thought. I shall expect to hear from
you as soon after your arrival in New S Wales
as well as London as you can spare
time. I hope you will be successful in obtaining
orders. I must thank you for the long letter
you sent and your carefulness in answering
the various questions in mine; it was not
neglect that prevented my answering it,
