became the township of Batesford which was subdivided and laid out by George Hope.282

Marianne met George Hoppe when visiting her sister, Catherine Hope, in 1851. George
Hope wished for the marriage to take place in Melbourne, but all members of the family insisted
on it being held in Cobbitty. The wedding date was changed several times, first it was to be on the
10 February which was earlier than planned because of concerns about the health of a family friend,
John Betts, and then it was delayed till the 12 February because of Marianne's own illness.283 After
thier marriage George and Marianne Hope lived at Derriwill on the Morrabool River near Geelong,
where they were noted for their generosity and hospitality. Some of their descendants are still living
on a portion of the original property, now called Darriwill North.

George Hope died on 25 April 1884 and was buried in the Presbyterian section of the
Eastern Geelong Cemetery. His wife, Marianne died on 19 August 1911 at Darriwill.284

George and Marianne Hope had the following children:

1.3.1 CATHERINE ELIZABETH HOPE (1853-1937)

Catherine Elizabeth Hope was born on 18 January at Geelong and married in 1886,
Edward Marsden Betts. She died on 15 June 1937 at Hunters Hill and he died on 14 February 1922
also at Hunters Hill. They had one daughter: Marion Hope Betts who was born in 1888 at Ryde and
who married in 1915 at Hunters Hill, Sydney James Antrobus Marshall.

1.3.2 GEORGE HOPE (1854-1860)

George Hope was born in 1854 at Geelong and died on 27 April 1860 at Darriwill
and was buried at Geelong.

1.3.3 JAMES HASSALL HOPE (1856-1903)

James Hassall Hope was born on 3 August 1856 at Geelong and married in 1882
Emily Boake. He died on 27 March 1903 at Leigh Road, Melbourne and was buried in Geelong.
She died at her residence in Toorak and was buried in Geelong on 29 September 1941. Their
children were: George Bancroft Hope who was born on 4 April 1883 at St. Kilda and married in
1910 at St. Kilda, (Elizabeth) Helen Scott; Fannie Isabel Hope who was born in 1884 at
Camperdown and married on 15 April 1909 at Camperdown, Robert Frederick Maberly Smith;
(Marion) Agnes Hope who was born in 1886 at Camperdown and married in New York, Henry
Irving North.
