Brainerd – "I longed to be perpet. [perpetually] & entirely cruc. [crucified]
to all things here below by t. [the] cs. [cross] of C. [Christ] – my soul was sweetly re-
signed to Gs [God's] disposal of me in every regard, & I saw that
0 [nothing] had happened but wh't [what] was best for me. I confid [confided] in G. [God]
th't [that] he w'd [would] never leave me, tho. [though]. I sh'd [should] walk thro. [through] t. [the] valley
of t. [the] shadow &c. [etc.] It was then my meat &c. [etc.] to be holy,
to live to t. [the] L. [Lord] & die to t. [the] L. [Lord]."

Edwards. "The pers. [person] of C. [Christ] 'peared [appeared] ineff [ineffably], excell. [excellent],
with an excy [excellency] great enou [enough] to swall. [swallow] up all th'ot [thought] & con-
-ception. I felt an ardency of soul to be – wh't [what] I kn. [know] not
how2 oth'wise1 [otherwise] to xpress [express], – m'tied [emptied] & anni'lated [annihilated]; to lie in t. [the]
dust & to be full of C. [Christ] alone, to luv [love] him with a holy & pure
luv [love]; to trust in him; to live upon him; to serve & fol-
-low him, & to be perft. [perfectly] sanctified, & made pure by a
divine & heavenly purity."

H. Martyn. "I do not know that anything w'd [would] be
a heaven to me, but t. [the] service of C. [Christ] – & t. [the] enjoyt [enjoyment] of his
presence. O, how sweet is life when spent in his
service!!"
