3 There is a class also of more extra-
-ordinary events – by wh. [which] men – as na-

These are shocks – revolutions – reverses –
financial crises – panics – pestilences – fam-
-ines – wars – disasters – earthquakes &c. [etc.] –

Often the course of one is stopped short
by sudden upturnings. When he that himself
most independent – God has risen
directly before him – companion stricken
down – his reason dethroned – his limbs
paralyzed. A mountain rises on his
pathway – a gulph [gulf] opens – the bubble
bursts – the vision fades – darkness
surrounds him – is it forever?
