Our bodies felt meanness – heart the pain
of such a scene. Our eyes behold the
melancholy ruin.

Two worthy & deserving families are driven
from there [their] home – ill-clad – in chill air to
see then all destroyed, or saved in blackened
remnants.

No slight thing, turned out
amid gloom & glare, agitation, excitement – dis-
-traction – the mind whelmed by its own action –
exhaustion of body, pain of soul – – Shouting
of men – roar & crackling of flames – falling
of timbers – & devastion [devastation] of all kinds –

They are stript [stripped] not of property large in
value – but of furniture – apparel – com-
-forts – conveniences – treasures – & the 1000
things wh. [which] – not costly but priceless – one
gathers about him in the course of years ~
