1 We are here in California. A
wonderful country – A land without
a paralell [parallel]. Owe duties to ourselves
to – the present – here. Thousands
would like our chances – not only
for getting good, but doing good.
Let us duly Esteem our privilege!

2 But we must nor forget what
we owe to the more distant future.
What a State, an Empire this is to be!
What ought we not to do for the
thick coming future in religious matters?

Our Sons & daughters will be here, we
can not divorce ourselves from its destiny.
Contemptible is the Spirit wh. [which] gathers all it
can, & says– "I & mine – are not here – let the country
go to the –. God is here to take account.
