& make night hideous – rats &
burrowing beasts infest every place –
sharpers & d idlers throng the streets –
& no man has a faithful friend.
2 What a picture this of a man
with no fixed principle – no power
of self-command!!
His morals grow shabby – his charac-
-ter tumbles in to ruin – – & soon
his respectability cracks, crumbles,
& crashes. (The whole person analogically) He is left a prey to every
foe. The rats of petty passion eat holes in his
frailness possessions – & larger beasts evil undermine
his principles – obscene birds build their
nests in his imagination – & vipers crawl
