So long preserved from its ravages –
so long enjoying almost an im-
-munity from disease – we are at
last overtaken. The scourge is
among us – we see its sad havoc.
We can not flee it. It tops the mountains.
It visits city & country. It overleaps
continents, it crosses oceans – it flies
with the winged couriers of the air.

It wades marshes – rests in dry places.
Revels amid snows, or riots amid flowers.
It is faster than we, & till it take
its flight we must endure it.

This is one of God's pestilences. It
has a work of visitation &
discipline to accomplish.
