2 To humble us in view of
the nature awful baseness of the
human mind & character in
its degradation. Apt to be proud
when we see what science has
done & man achieved.

But what fears, superstitions,
panics, desertions – abominations
are seen in the face of pestilences
How little that is noble – calm –
heroic – & elevated is often seen!

How selfish & detestable men will
show themselves! How it will
sicken the heart, & appal [appall] the
mind to see men more cruel &
shameless than the brutes!!
