From our childhood we have been
reading of the misrule and vices of cities;
of their slums, haunts, and horrible dens;
of their wrongs, wickednesses, and immoral-
-ities; of their moral corruptions, polit-
-ical debasements, and religious destitu-
-tions; of their being blots, blotches,
and sores upon the body politic;
of their false, fictitious ways and gambling
Schemes; of the unreal, artificial, and
heartless life they foster; and of the
bottomless gulf into which all sig-
-nificant life goes down from the midst
of them.

With such notions in mind
we have, for years, been pained to hear of the
rapid growths of our American Cities; and,
more particularly, of the flocking to them
