All along the upper Sacra-
-mento, and the Feather rivers,
cities were surveyed, mapped,
and begun, about one fourth of
which now survive, as landings,
or towns, of some importance,
while most of them have left
no permanent memorial, and
their names have been forgotten. Marysville
50 miles northward, of the Capital,
had a brief city life and then
shrank to the proportions of a large
village. Stockton, 50 miles south,
has maintained a sort of city
life, but has grown to no grand
proportions, and never will.
