that the satisfaction derived
from them was more in the pur-
-suit than in the possession, and
that the having with no possibil-
-ities of more was scarcely a joy.

Horace Greeley said, as many a
man of distinction had said, all
along the serried ranks of this
worlds [world's] greatness, "Power is a dream,
wealth is a vanity, and fame
is a puff of air." And the list is
long of those, in every generation,
of those who confess that they get
less out of life than they put
