by these firms. But there were only a few
dwellings, or stores, in the place till late
in the Spring of '49 [1849]; when the irruption of
the people of the East, arriving by steamers,
began. This was eml enlarged by the coming
in of vessels from around the Horn, in the
Summer; and magnified by the accessions
from the overland hosts, in the autumn. *
