However, this was not a perfect in-
-strument, in the view of many, and in
December, still another Charter was
presented and adopted; and a Com-
-mittee was sent with it to San Jose,
where the Legislature was in session,
to have it formally enacted by that
body. In due time, March 18th, 1850,
the Bill Chartering the city became
a law. So Sacramento became the
Earliest Chartered city of California.
The first Election under the Charter was
held on the 1st of April, Electing Mayor,
Recorder, Marshall, Assessor, Attorney, Treas-
-urer, and nine Councilmen. Of these
