As long as there was room enough
near the heart of the City for owner and
and settler both, little trouble was ex-
-perienced. When however the city authorities,
at the request of owners, attempted
to remove "Settlers" and change posses-
-sion, the troubles began, though the
Courts all sustained the Sutter titles.
After days and weeks of excitement
the city authorities finally by force gave
certain Sutter Claimants possession,
and imprisoned the resistants. This
led to an attempt on the part of the
"settlers" to break jail, and then to an
armed parade along the streets. In one
street they met Sheriff, Mayor, and
