During the year 1850, thus closing,
the City had enlarged its area. Most
of the former Cloth Structures had
given place to wooden ones. Several
churches had provided themselves with
houses of worship, of moderate di-

The human agencies at work
in the building of the city, nearly all
of them gave fair Satisfaction, ex-
-cept the Common Council, which
had no ideas of economy, and worked
mainly for enriching its own members,
