Without this intense interest in work – it is almost impracticable.

& and a heart bursting with human sympathies & heavenly love ~

(c.) By self-denial & zealous endeavors to give efficacy to the means
of Grace. God denied himself, so did C. [Christ] in the great work ~
We must do same if nec. [necessary] to support gospel institutions; to attend worship
ourselves – to bring families – to support preaching – to preach themselves –
to live as they preach in some manifest degrees. To spread holy in-
-fluences around all in the com. [community]. – Prayer meeting – Sab. [Sabbath] School – Societies &c [etc.]

Rem^s [Remarks] 1. How full of dignity is this work!
Not mean at all. High – noble – self-rewarding, glorious. God-like ~

2. How sh'd [should] G^s [God's] coop. [cooperation] assure us of final success!
G. [God] & man in it from t. [the] first. Jesus is both. He or – high, we here – but all together.

3. If we labor not with God – then He must be against
us – How disastrous to have such an enemy of our work!!
Before G [God] as wood, hay, stubble; house on sand. God shall smite in anger!!

I. He that win^th [winneth] Souls is Wise – for, He proposes
the best ends possible – not
1. Any selfish forms of good. Not
(a) gratifica. [gratification] animal desires – food – rest – lust.
(b) " [gratification] intellec [intellectual] aspirt^s [aspirations] pride, ambition, glory.
(c) attainment of kn. [knowledge], fame, power, &c [etc.] (Men of genius.)
(d) " [attainment of] worldly sustance [sustenance], riches, honors ~

2. But – Benevolent – good – ends.
(a) Individ^s [individuals] highest good – temp. [temporal], & eternal.
(b) Highest good of the community.

(d) Glory & honor of God Supreme.

II He uses the best means; ~ for
1 The good of the Individual.
(a) Not by appealing to animal feelings & low passions.
(b) But by convincing judgment – reasoning.
(c) Drawing him from dangers, errors, &c [etc.]
(d) Making the heart right with God.
(e) Thus leading to peace, pardon, hope ~
(f) Inspiring confidence, faith in Jesus –
conducting to high, firm, rock of safety.
(g) In fine – inducing right desires,
feelings, purposes, & actions. Begin-
-ning heaven in the soul ~

2. Effecting the good of t. [the] Com. [Community] & t. [the] Universe.
(a) Not by shutting from the world.
(b) " [Not] nec. [necessarily] taking from sphere of action.
(c) " [Not] by societary reforms – social changes.
(d) By adding one more to the company
that do good from the heart.
(e) By sending joy among angels
& quickening with zeall [zeal] all that love holiness.

3. Effecting the glory of God ~
(a) Shows god's [God's] power on the heart.
(b) " " [Shows God's] goodness & grace.
(c) Adds new luster to work of Redemption.
(d) Another diadem ornament – another
star in the firmament.

1. How worthy are such of commendation &
encouragement. Could do nothing worthier.

2. Wretched & Cruel the life of those
that destroy, not win, souls!!

3. How awful may the Consequences of
a slight neglect – know not
how powerfully we affect destinies ~
