this theory is, that it strikes one as
a Contrivance, an accommodation,
a compromise, a fetch. The Power
behind phenomena may be so in-
-terpreted as to render one's concep-
-tion of the universe, virtually, atheis-
-tic, pantheistic, or theistic. And
certainly that can be no true idea of
the Great First Cause which assumes it
to be unknowable, and then prac-
-tically allows the Contents of the
Unknowable to be increased or
diminished, according to the con-
