My Dear Sir,

I do not see
how I can get ready any paper for
the July meeting of the Historical So-
-Ciety [Society]. I hope to have some vacation,
and I may not be present at that
meeting.

If there were any Special Subject
for a paper, and one on which I might
be supposed to be prepared, without
much new investigation – I might
possibly make the undertaking;
but I do not think it proper
to make any decided promise.
I hope some one is better situated,
if not better disposed.
