More or less laid aside. I may here
observe that not merely intoxicating
drink has tenure to their ruin, the
extremes of changes they are exposed
to through the intercourse with Europeans
now living like savages than again like

I have seen a number of fine young
men cut off simply from this cause ere they
had such temptations to drink. They
would perhaps for a few weeks or months
[words crossed out] reside with Europeans & conform
to some extent to our habits accruing
among other things part of [word crossed out] our dress
and then suddenly take to the bush
and shake off almost every vestige
of civilyzed life and they would [indecipherable]
severe colds & contact incurable diseases.
