even their own sisters or mothers. If
unawares they come suddenly near women,
they must carefully avoid looking at them
The woman too must be on her guard lest
she cast a bold look at the young men,
in modesty she [word crossed out] will cover sometimes her face,
lest she should look or be looked at, and
the young men must hasten off. Thus it
[word crossed out] would often happen I might be [indecipherable]
with or teaching some of these Black girls
and a group of young men approach who
would keep them a hundred yards off or
go behind the house. And if they particularly
wished to see me, I had either to send
the women away or leave them & go after the
young men. On the whole I must confess these
laws of restriction are closely observed. Still
if the young men can slyly cast a glance

as you may naturally expect apt to do so.
I might occasionally observe them peeping
at them through the slats when they would blushe
And if they heard me exclaim, Oh I see young
man must not look on the women, they would break
