37,
I now come to speak on an important
point as regards the legends & traditions
of the Aborigines in reference to their belief
[word crossed out] of a superior or superior & supernatural
beings. That the believe in an evil spirit
whom they call Wandung, or Wardungs,
is pretty generally known. These continually
haunt their imagination. All the ills
they suffer, every sickness that suddenly
overtakes them & cannot and can be accounted
for by clear natural causes is the effect
of some evil spirit who either directly or
indirectly has attacked them With
this idea is connected in their mind as you
may imagine the belief in witchcraft.
An enemy by [word crossed out] the instrumentality
of an evil spirit has made them ill, or
caused some misfortune. But they have
their doctors as they are ususally called by
them in English who can cure if not always
at least often the evil inflicted. These
doctors, Nguagir in their own language
