8 9 & 10 Jany Halled Ice & filled the house with
Ice four in thick mixed with snow and not
good verry cold & the snow still on the ground
ther at 3 Degs

11th Jany 1856 verry cold Ther at 1 Deg above
zero

12 Jany 1856 Snowed Hailed & then sleeted
The Snow & Hail is 12 in deep and steeled on top
so hard a horse cannot travel and nearly
hard enough to bear a mans weight the
children can run on top Ther at 20 deg
no work done this year yet and from the looks
of the snow it will be sometime before we get
to work

Sunday the 20th Jany 1856 Snowed 2 in on Top
of the other Two snows which is now 10 or 12
in deep verry cold weather & nothing
doing but getting fire wood

White Wash Recipe
Take 1/2 Bu unslacked lime slack it in boiling water
cover it during the process to keep in the steam
Strain the liquid through a fine seive and add to it
a peck of salt previously well dissolved in warm water
Three lbs Ground rice boiled to a think past and stired
in Boiling hot. 1/2 lb powdered Spanish whiting
and 1 lbs of Glue which has previously been
dissolved by soaking it well and then hanging
it over a slow fire in a small kettle in a
large one filled with water. Add five gals
hot water to the mixture Stire it well and
let it stand a few days covered from the
dirt It should be put on right hot
it is said one pt of this will cover a square
yo on the outside of a house it retains its
brilliance for many years coloring matter may
be put in & made of any shade you whish
