& the 16th of March
Saturday the 23rd March 1856 Finished sowing Oats
and comenced Breaking up for corn in the field
south of my house I Returned from
the North to day and found everything looking
like winter yet no Buds or Blooms and yet
during last week there was a snow storm covered
the ground in deep it fell on the 16th

Thursday the 27th March 1856 Cold windy day Snowed
some several times during the day cleared off at night and
froze the ground we commenced planting our crop
of Irish potatoes but it got too cold we stoped
before we got done running 3 Turn plowing breaking
corn ground all this week

28th March 1856 Planted 7 bu Irish Potatoes to day it
is verry windy & cold a hard freeze last night
and no signs of Spring yet

Monday the 31st March 1856 Hailed & Rained
last night and this morning too it is snowing
hard for four or five hours but melted
as fast as it fell had it not of melted it
would have been 4 or 5 in deep cleared off old
in the afternoon and a hard freeze at
night

April the 2nd 1856 quite cold yesterday & to day
ground frozen we finished breaking
our corn land to day but it is too cold
to plant corn so we
