Queensland place names and their meanings.

[Kulangoor] (continued)

This name was given by the Railway Authorities, within
recent years,to a Railway Station presumably because of
the proximity thereto of a sugar-cane farm.

[Ninderry]. The name of a mountain near the [Marutchy River].
This name does not mean dogwood which in this locality is
"manbu". The name is derived from"nindurri " meaning "place
of bush leeches, from nindur,or nyindur" meaning leech.

[Wootha]. A native name for the red cedar tree.

Witha, or [Witta]. This name I believe to be a white man's
corrupt pronunciation of Wootha above mentioned.

[Cooroorah].)
[Eerwah].)----Meanings unknown.
[Pinbarran])

[Eumundi]. Name of an aboriginal headman who was of some
service to the [Petrie], [Stuart Russel], [Jolliffee] expedition in
in 1842, on which expedition the [Mary River] was discovered.

[Yurol]. A variant of yurru, a scrub vine which the blacks
used for the purposes of a rope.

[Tandur]. The name of the narrow leafed irong-bark tree.

This is a Yagarabul (Brisbane River) word given by
the Railway Authorities to a Railway Station on the North
Coast Railway.

[Woondum]. Is the abo. name for the blue-tongued,or sleepy
lizard.

[widgee]. Meaning unknown.

[Durundur]. Was, in early days, called Durandan. I have
no authoritative meaning for this name but I am of opinion
that it is derived from" dhurdan" mean place of scrub or
jungle, from "Dhuri", Scrub and "dan" place of.

In support of this I may mention that in this locality, be
before the white settler came, were held the great triennial
meetings of the Coastal tribes at or near the southern end
of the Coastal Range and in proximity of the mountain scrubs
in which the Bunya Pine trees were at that time plentiful.
