Sacramento, May 18 , 1862

Special meeting of the Congregation
B'nai Israel was held. L. Elkus presiding.
The President stated the object of this
meeting was to elect a chazzan,
shochet & teacher. Communications were
read from the secretary and
Rev. M. R. Cohen, received and placed
on file. The trustees reported that
the funds of the congregation being at
present in a very depreciated condition,
they had fixed the salary of the person
filling the office of chazzan, shochet &
teacher at seventy five dollars a month
and ten dollars a month for collecting,
it being optional with the person filling
the above offices to collect or not, in case of not
desiring, that amount to be paid to a
collector, which was unanimously
adopted. On motion of B. Kasminski
six months was the length of time for
a chazzan, shochet, teacher was to be
elected for. Nominations being next in
order for chazzan, shochet, teacher.
Rev. M.R. Cohen was nominated, the
rules suspended and Rev. M.R. Cohen
elected by acclamation. The following
preamble resolutions were unaniminously
adopted.

Whereas, it has pleased an All-Wise
Providence to remove from our
midst our worthy and beloved
member Mr. M. Harris and
whereas, in the demise of Mr. M. Harris
the congregation has lost an able advocate
of the cause of Judaism. Therefore be it
resolved that this congregation
deeply deplore the loss of such a
member.

Resolved, that the sympathy of this
congregation be tendered to the widow
