Sacramento, August 6th, 1868
A special meeting of the Congregation B'nai
Israel was called by the President.
L. Elkus in the chair.
The president stated the object of this meeting
to be the consideration of the raising of the
synagogue, also the reading of propositions
from several gentlemen offering their
services as chazzan.
A communication was read from Mr.
R. J. Graham wherein he proposes to pay
the interest on all the money expended for
the purpose of raising the shul for a term of 6 months.
On motion the communication was received
and proposition accepted.
A communication was read from J. Johnson
proposing to build a bulkhead, raise the shul
for sixteen hundred & fifty dollars. On motion
the same was referred to committee on building.
A motion was made and carried that
the shul be raised to the high grade and
that a committee of (3) be appointed to conduct
the same and be styled the building committee.
The president be one of that committee.
The president appointed J. Davis & L. Shawl
on said committee.
The president stated that Mr. Silberstein
is not willing to act as temporary shochat
for this congregation for less than 40.00 per month.
A motion was made and adopted
that we dispense with the hiring of a shochat
for the present.
