of Psychology and Education. A verynlimited number of elective courses in
Education might be open, as electives, to those students who have an inherent
interest in that field, and who would want more than the minimum for the class
A certificate. No elective course, however, should be given unless there are at
least 7 students to take it. Since all the work in Psychology and Education
that is necessary for the preparation of the classroom teacher can well
constitute a part of the work leading to the A. B., B. S. and B. S. in Commerce
Degrees, it is recommended that the B. S. in Education be eliminated.
(2) B.S. Degree in Commerce.
The training of people for business has been a part of the work of
the North Carolina College for Negroes throughout its history. The nature of
the work has been such as to prepare bookkeepers, stenographers, clerks and
secretaries. Many of the men and women now in business have had their training
at that institution. The commercial work is quite popular, as evidenced by the
present enrollment in the Department of Commerce. (See appendix) The institution
now has three whole time and one part time instructor in the Commercial Department.
The department, which now includes a maximum of three years, can easily be
expanded to cover a four year course lead to the B.S. Degree in Commerce
This standard four year course would give all the advantages that the present
offerings give, and, in addition to that, would open up the field of commercial
education in the high school, and would give more adequate training for the
larger business enterprise of the world. Moreover, this expansion may be made
without increasing the number of instructors. All the specialized training that
would be offered in the four year course should not exceed that which is now
offered, - indeed, the present offerings might be reduced somewhat. The general
