To the Budget Commission,
Raleigh, N. C.
Gentlemen:
The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Durham
State Normal School, together with those of us signing this paper, have
gone over the matter of appropriations for that institution, and we be-
lieve that the requests made by Superintendent Allen; namely, $375,000.00
for buildings and improvements, and for maintenance $40,000.00 for 1925-26
and $45,000.00 for 1926-27 are the least amounts that we can hope to even
[???] beginning to develop this institution on the basis of a standard
normal school.
As is generally well known, the present buildings and
equipment all will necessarily have to be scrapped almost immediately,
which means that the entire plant will have to be rebuilt from the be-
ginning up. We feel since we are facing this situation, we ^can do nothing
further than to present this matter to you in this way, and make an earnest
appeal for the very largest appropriations that can be made available for
this institution.
With best wishes, I am
Very sincerely yours,
N. C. Newbold,
Director
James E. Sheperd,
Principal.
