Dear Senator:
I notice the accounts given in the papers of the opening of the Leland Stanford Jr. University, and I congratulate you upon the success of your great work. It will be a monument to you and your family that will not rust or crumble with age but grow brighter and larger as centuries go by. It was wise for you to start this great university yourself instead of leaving it to be done by others under brief words of a last Will and Testament.
I would compensate for a trip across
