After induction, Mr. Obenchain trained as a signal soldier at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. He was sent overseas with the 116th Forward Signal Battalion of the 41st Division. That division was broken up, its infantry regiments used as replacements for other divisions, but the 116th Signal Bn supported the AEF all during the fall offensives. With the Armistice, Obenchain was transferred to the 102nd Field Signal Battalion, in support of the 27th Division's mission as part of the Army of Occupation. He returned with the division to Camp Devens, Massachusetts, and was discharged on 15 March 1919.
