Roland Obenchain earned a direct commission as a First Lieutenant in August, 1917, probably owing to his having already earned a law degree. Originally assigned to the 84th Division, he spent another year at various camps around the US before being assigned as a staff officer in the American Expeditionary Forces. He remained in Europe after the Armistice, ultimately serving as the commander of the headquarters detachment for II Corps before returning to the US in the spring of 1919.
