Due to the relative lack of artillery units in the still-mobilizing US National Army, the War Department ordered the 4th Indiana Infantry Regiment to reorganize as a field artillery unit, which it did in the summer of 1917 at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. It then served in France as part of the 38th Division. Interested researchers can find a history of the unit in many Indiana libraries: The Story of the 139th Field Artillery, American Expeditionary Forces, by Robert Lowry Morehead, OCLC #4472882
