I am just now very sad over the sudden
death of my dear friend, Fannie Paul at
Carlsbad (Mr Drexel's daughter) who was
here a month ago, well and happy. She leaves three
little children - died of typoid [sic] fever. Mr Drexel
who is at Carlsbad, most distressed, leaves for
America today with her body - her husband
and children. She had great health and all to
make her happy in this life.

Please pardon this long letter, dear Mrs Stan-
ford, and accept our affectionate regards for
you and the Senator, in which our children
