Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Forrest
My dear friends:

Your dear son
who has been named after my
loved one can now hold up
the name and character of
Leland Stanford as an ideal
worthy of imitating. Not that
I for a moment thought my
husband was ever capable of
committing a wrong and I
did not act as his defender
because he did not need de-
fense, but the suit might
have implied a wrong which
the world at large would not
be able to understand.

State and the highest tribunal
of the land, the United States
