religion; ascertaining the limitations
that science puts upon religion on the
one hand, and the helps that it affords
on the other, securing for religious in-
struction the exactness of statement and
the rigid adherance to fact that char-
acterizes scientific investigation and
statement; and so gradually elimin-
ating the element of superstition and
fanaticism that have hitherto operated to
the great detriment of the { } of the
Christian Church. This is but a crude out-
line, yet it hints the idea. And as it
would be conducted along strictly un-
denominational lines, it might be
worthy of the countenance of the
University.

Pardon me for having written at such
considerable length, but I was not able
properly to present the matter in hand
within narrower limits. Even as it is
the statement appears to me to be imper-
fect, but I trust that it may prove to be
sufficient.
