Strafford, Vt. June 24, 1890

My dear Mrs Stanford:

When I last saw your
lamented husband at your home in Wash-
ington, his mental vigor was so conspicuous
that I felt sure his useful life would be
prolonged for many years, and was wholly
unprepared for the news of his sudden death.
It will be your comfort that in bidding adieu
to this world, his record was full of honors and
of good works, and that he leaves you happy in
his love and confidence in charge of the great
philanthropic enterprises which were very
dear to him and which have so long absorbed
your mutual attention and loving hearts.
Your great loss tenderly touches the whole
