Pres. David Starr Jordan
Leland Stanford Jr. University
Stanford University, Calif.

My dear Dr. Jordan:

I enclose you herewith letter of our friend, A. M. Lockwitzky, ad-
dressed to the President ; also his Curriculum Vitae.

The Colonel placed these in my hands some time ago, but I have been
so awfully rushed with business, I have not been able to give them the atten-
tion that I should.

I know that these will come to you at a bad time. The death of
Mrs. Stanford is a sad shock to us all. I most fervently hope that in-
vestigation will prove that death was due to natural causes. I am most
unwilling that your University shall be obliged to hand down through the
ages the tradition of such an infamous and inhuman act. There has been
so much nobleness, unselfishness and self-sacrifice connected with the
planting and blossoming of the University that it grieves me deeply to
feel that its history is to be marred by so dark a tragedy. I express
to you and to the University my deep sympathy.

I enclose letter to Mr. Roosevelt which you can sign, if it
seems best to you, or you can write another note to accompany it.

Yours sincerely,
J. H. Wheelan
