Rev. W. K. Guthrie,
2323 Pacific Avenue,
San Francisco, Cal.
Dear Sir:
I am very glad indeed to get your prompt response
that you will act as a substitute for Rev. Mr. Hemphill in
the funeral services of Mrs. Stanford next Friday in the
Memorial Church here. Your especial part in the services
will consist in offering the first prayer immediately follow-
ing the Funeral March and the Choral. Prompted to it by the
necessities of an order of services which is long and compli-
cated, I venture to suggest that this prayer should be made
very brief. Of course, your own experience will tell you
what the general character of a prayer for this part of the
services should be. I venture only to say that we hope that
all the Clergymen will avoid every reference to the doubtful
matter of the manner of Mrs. Stanford's death.
In coming to Stanford next Friday, it will be desirable
for you to take the regular 10.30 train from 3rd and Townsend
streets. You might, however, come on the 11 o'clock special
train from the same station. You will find carriages await-
ing you and others at the station in Palo Alto when you arrive.
Thanking you very cordially for your courtesy, I am,
Very truly yours,
