United States Senate,

Washington, D.C., July 4th/93,

My dear Mrs Stanford

My heart was deeply touch-
-ed by the startling news of the departure
of your dear husband - whose great
kindliness, during my years, as chaplain
in the Senate, had won a warm place
in my heart.

With this mail I send you two
copies of the Lutheran Observer, for which
I have corresponded for many years,
with my best utterance concerning
your now departed husband, whom
I was happy to number among my
prized friends. In a little while
nothing will remain of us in the
world, but the good we do. In your
many memorials the world is made
better for your united life, God's grace
gives strength and healing and com-
fort & the life eternal, And may God's
rich blessing abide upon you at this time
of your solitude & sorrow.
