Between our bites of cake and candy, we wrote poetry, drew pictures, told jokes, whistled, discussed the Radiata of Zoology, and above all enjoyed a conversation in French for about a half hour. Paul said the candy was good and "le gateau est tres bon," (the cake is very good).

My dearest Mama:

If you only knew how happy your birth-day present made me, you would feel well recompensed for your trouble. I was unable, on account of the stormy weather, to get the package before Friday afternoon, but when I did get it I enjoyed it all the more.
