about it, and he confidentially told me that he'd "jest as soon givus a holiday only he's afraid if he proposes it to the Faculty they'd dock him his salary for that day." Now don't say anything to anybody about this for it would humiliate our "prex." to have anyone besides us students know that he is hard up for every cent of the ten thousand he annually draws his check for.

But to be serious, it is impossible to give the holiday. So much work has to be done between now and the end of May that it is impracticable to give a single day of idleness to the busy students.

A number of the Frisco boys are going down intending to "cut class" (remain absent) on Monday, and return Tuesday. If I had not so much to do I might be sorely tempted to go and do likewise!

Our University is to meet Berkeley in the first of the two public debates between the colleges on February 4th. If I do not come home next Friday, I shall in all probability do so the following Friday in order to attend the debate which, by the way, is to be held at Berkeley. The debate last year was held here.
