My dear Mamma:

It is fortunate for you that you wrote Friday. If you had neglected me I should certainly have forgotten to write to you. You are never so busy that you might find an opportunity for writing. Why if it comes to a case of necessity you could send a postal telling me that you are well and happy; but a postal is not half as welcome as a letter.

You mention Miss Irving, and hint that I am contented with her letters and might therefore pardon you for your not writing. Miss Elsie's letters will never take the place of yours. Her letters contain only Central gossip which naturally interests me; yours contain news that vitally concerns me, namely, home and yourself
