now is the war. Thirty-four of our boys went away last week, and will soon be sent off to the Philipines. A young fellow who went from our club has been made a corporal. Mind you a corporal in the U.S.A, and he was only a boy, my age, and a raw recruit; but he was very earnest and drilled hard: and an early promotion is his reward. Think of the opportunities for promotion in the army now at that rate! Before that young fellow returns to college, he'll be wearing epaulets. These students have excellent opportunities, and our Stanford boys will make the most of them.

There is a company drilling here waiting for the next call from the president. And when the call comes our University will send a complete company to the front compose only of students. What a jolly company it will be! "Students," as an army officer said the other day, "make good soldiers". Hurrah for the student-soldiers
