with me. We saw all kinds of sights. In the violent insane ward some of hte poor beings were in straight jackets, so they could do themselves no harm. We saw several fights between the inmates, and observed how the attendants, though they frequently quarrel among themselves. I saw several idiots: I.E. women and men totally devoid of reasoning - knowing absolutely nothing. Oh, they were piteous objects. There were several sights particularly pathetic. Here was a woman with a spendidly cultivated voice who sang for us. She had become violently insane from overwork. Here was a man, with clear, sharp, intellectual features, reading a book of Thackeray's, yet who was insane
