Stanford, Jan. 28, '99.

My dear mamma:-

I am sorry to find myself here at Stanford this beautiful evening, instead of at home. My presence on a debate in our Literary Society prevented my usual trip to San Francisco. Next Friday night the great Carhol Debate bet. S. and U.C. comes off down here, and I shall probably attend it. This will keep me down here at that time. The Friday following our Class intends to give an affair similar to the "Plug Ugly" celebration and my attendance will, in all likelihood, be required. If this function does not take place I shall have the delightful opportunity of returning home and of partaking another of those celebrated $30 meals of yours, including Shasta and maple. Hurrah for square meals!!
