taken the right step now. All that is left to be done is to get the people to vote on the constitutional amendment which comes before the people at the next election. The adoption of this amendment saves to the University annually many thousands. This enormous reduction in expenses will enable Stanford to educate the poor young people of the state free. Berkeley, as a state institution, pays no taxes. If Stanford did not exist the state would have to bear the expense of educating at the State University those who now attend Stanford. Since the state is relieved from this burden it might at least to exempt Stanford from the excessive taxation to which this University is subjected. Every Stanford man in California will work like a Spartan
